Born in Liverpool, England (October 9th 1940) John Winston Ono Lenon, was a rock musician, singer-songwriter, author, and peace activist. John was raised by his aunt and uncle, but regularly visiting his mother who played him Elvis Presley records, taught him to play the banjo and bought him his first guitar in 1957. He entered Liverpool College of Art, but he couldn’t finish it and was dropped out.
Lennon formed The Beatles with members of his first band, The Quarrymen, which he established at the age of 16 in March 1957. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Sutcliffe became The Beatles after the other members left the band. After The Beatles broke up in 1970, he began his solo career and released albums such as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. After a self-imposed "retirement" in 1975 to raise his son Sean, Lennon reemerged in 1980 with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered less than one month after its release. The album won the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and is Lennon's best-selling studio album at three million shipments in the US. Lennon's body was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.
He was ranked fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2008.
